In 1813, Brazil welcomed the prime Indian Zebu breeds, directly imported from India, marking the inception of a remarkable chapter in its agricultural history. Renowned for their sturdiness and resilience, the Indian breeds swiftly adapted to Brazil’s climate, thriving amidst harsh weather, floods, and droughts. Their remarkable endurance enabled them to take on long marches to access the finest pastures in the country, adding to their popularity. This historical exchange created a lasting connection between India and Brazil, grounded in the common heritage of Zebu cattle and their lasting impact on both countries.
In a recent significant step towards preserving the heritage and genetic diversity of Zebu cattle, the International Federation of Indigenous Zebu Cattle of India (IFIZCI) and the Associação Brasileira dos Criadores de Zebu (ABCZ) have joined forces in a groundbreaking partnership. This collaboration aims to exchange pure Indian Zebu genetics and leverage advanced breeding technologies for the benefit of both nations. The primary objectives include the exchange of technology, knowledge, and best practices in Zebu cattle breeding adopted by Brazil, with a focus on Gir, Ongole (Nelore), Red Sindhi, and Kankrej (Guzerá) breeds.

IFIZCI, the International Federation of Indigenous Zebu Cattle of India, is an India-based organization and a member of FICEBU, dedicated to preserving and enhancing the 88 native Zebu cattle breeds in 28 states and 2 Union Territories of India. Serving as a global hub, IFIZCI collaborates with international entities to improve Zebu breeds, fostering partnerships that facilitate the exchange of ideas and practices for the holistic development and conservation of India’s indigenous cows. Through these efforts, the Federation is actively working towards increasing the income of cattle breeding farmers by multiple folds in India.
IFIZCI plans to proactively export the pure Indian original genetics of various Zebu breeds to ABCZ in the future, thereby enriching Brazil’s Zebu cattle population with increased genetic diversity and resilience. While Brazil currently only hosts four Indian Zebu breeds, IFIZCI intends to introduce other exotic Zebu breeds not yet present in Brazil through this collaboration. In reciprocity, ABCZ has been imparting its expertise in advanced genetic and breed improvement technologies to India, thus facilitating a bilateral exchange of knowledge. The growing collaboration between IFIZCI and ABCZ encompasses a wide range of areas including research and development, mutual exchange of germplasm, and sharing expertise in Zebu cow management, health, nutrition, and sustainable practices. This collaborative effort aims to elevate the genetic quality of Zebu cattle, enhance breeding techniques, and promote responsible practices.
The visit of the President of ABCZ, Mr. Gabriel Garca Cid, Vice President, Mr. Arnaldo Manuel de Souza Machado Borges and the delegation of farmers and breeders from Brazil to India marked a pivotal moment, elevating the partnership to new heights. Mr. Gabriel Garca Cid brought with him a wealth of experience and passion for the livestock industry. His visionary leadership and commitment to advancing Zebu cattle breeds made his visit to India a significant milestone in fostering international cooperation. During his visit, the MoU between IFIZCI and ABCZ was signed on November 4, 2023, solidifying the commitment of both organizations to collaborate in promoting and enhancing Zebu cow breeds. This ceremonial act served as a symbol of mutual dedication to the shared objectives outlined in the agreement.
IFIZCI and ABCZ are committed to not only enhancing genetic quality of Zebu breeds but also uplifting the communities reliant on Zebu cattle, exemplifying their holistic approach to sustainable agricultural practices. Together, they are establishing the largest cutting-edge genetic laboratories in two cities of India, namely, Gurgaon in Haryana and Bhavnagar in Gujarat. These laboratories will be focused on advancing the genetics and germplasm of various Zebu cattle breeds in India. For genetic export, we will adopt and maintain the protocols as per the ABCZ guidelines. The facilities will provide essential services at economical costs, including DNA testing and registration for all breeding bulls across diverse Zebu cattle breeds, thus benefiting local farmers and breeders. Concurrently, the partnership emphasizes educating farmers about the benefits and potential of Zebu cattle, highlighting their adaptability to various climates, their role in sustainable agriculture, and their economic value. This knowledge transfer will enable farmers to make informed decisions, while capacity-building initiatives and training programs will take precedence in enhancing the livelihoods of local communities engaged in Zebu cattle farming.
The Indo-Brazil partnership is poised to achieve new milestones with IFIZCI’s upcoming organization of the largest conference and expo of Zebu cows in India in 2024, known as the Kamdhenu Gau Krishi Mahotsav 2023 (Kamdhenu Zebu Cattle & Agriculture Event 2024). In a further strengthening of this collaboration, ABCZ has agreed to partner with IFIZCI and participate in the event. Through this initiative, millions of farmers and breeders from India will have the opportunity to witness the commendable work undertaken by ABCZ in promoting food sustainability through cattle farming. This three-day event will be the first-of-its-kind in India, dedicated to showcasing the diversity of 88 Indian indigenous cow breeds and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
As India and Brazil chart a shared future, the Indo-Brazil partnership stands as a testament to international cooperation, with a commitment to preserving Zebu heritage and fostering the prosperity of farmers on both ends of the spectrum. Through shared knowledge, collaborative efforts, and visionary leadership, India and Brazil are cultivating a legacy that transcends borders, ensuring a resilient and vibrant future for Zebu cattle and the communities that depend on them.
